Care spotlight – Mary Seacole – The pioneer of convalescent care

Mary Seacole was born to a Jamaican mother and Scottish father in 1805, and is widely considered to be the world’s first nurse practitioner. Growing up in the Caribbean she studied herbal medicines, and travelled to Britain to offer her services at the start of the Crimean war.

At the war office she was met with prejudice due to her gender and heritage, and was told she wasn’t needed. Undefeated, Mary travelled to Balaklava herself, and set up her own refuge for injured and sick soldiers called the ‘British Hotel’.

She was also known to go to the battlefield – risking her life to tend to the wounded.

After the war she returned home to nothing. To show their gratitude for her bravery and compassion, service men organised a money-raising gala for Mary in London, attended by over 80,000 people, including royalty.

Donation to FoodBank

Our Head Office team decided to pull together and make a donation to the Peterborough FoodBank instead of operating a Secret Santa again for Christmas 2022. We’ve just received confirmation that the funds have been received and are now being put to good use.

At Augusta Care, all of our staff receive a minimum of 1 week in our training room with our Training Manager to receive their mandatory induction training, followed by any other specific and specialised training that may be required. We believe this gives our new starters the best possible start with the company and we’re very proud to have received yet further positive feedback this past week.

Celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022

Our office staff team got together ahead of the 4-day long bank holiday weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Our Board room was was decorated in red, white and blue ahead of the team and our service user training champions getting together to enjoy an afternoon tea, absolutely fit for royalty!

Whilst the majority of shops are already sold out of decorations, we took ours from the official toolkit online at: https://platinumjubilee.gov.uk/toolkit/ There are lots of great resources on the site.

It’s a great opportunity to get together, we can’t wait to see all the photos from our staff and service users after the long weekend to see how everyone celebrated!
